Set S.M.A.R.T. Goals

The Good News is that you can absolutely Achieve those resolutions as Long as You remain Focused and Motivated Throughout the Year. Here are Some Ways to help you keep on the grind of Your Goals this Year too.

Set S.M.A.R.T. Goals.

A lot of Goals are so expansive that they can be overwhelming. As a Result, it’s Difficult to stay Focused and Motivated because they feel unattainable. At my past
company, I remember setting a lot of Goals that were exciting. Unfortunately, many
weren't obtainable and it could hurt employee Motivation.

When We started Calendar, we made it a point to break the big Goals into Smaller S.M.A.R.T. Goals. These are Goals that are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and
Time-Bound. This has helped us make the Goals more Manageable and easier to Achieve because you can Focus on specific Goals that have a deadline.

For example, if you want to write and publish an eBook on leadership, Your first Goal in January could be coming-up with chapters. In February you start writing a chapter and so
on until the book has been written.

Celebrate Your Accomplishments -- even those Small Wins.

Don’t wait to celebrate until you’ve reached Your big Goals. Go ahead and celebrate even the smallest of victories. In fact, keep track of Your small Achievements daily. It will
keep you Motivated throughout the year because this activates the reward circuitry of Your brains. This then opens a pathway that releases the chemicals that makes us feel
pretty good and happy because we’re proud that we Achieved something.

Try something New.

When you do the same song and dance every day it’s easy to get into a rut. Try something new when you get the chance. It can be fun, exciting, and reignite Your Focus and Motivation. For example, if you want to enhance Your leadership skills you could try out a new online course or attend a conference or weekend retreat. You can then try out what you’ve learned in Your workplace. If it doesn’t work, you can make some adjustments until it works.

Have a Plan, but be Flexible

When you purchase a new piece of furniture for Your home or office you probably have to follow the directions so that it can be assembled correctly. The same is true of Your Goals. If you don’t have a plan, then how are you really going to Achieve Your Goals ?

Being Realistic -- you won’t stay on the “follow-through” Plan.

However, you also need to be a Little Flexible. Sometimes things don’t go as planned and you’ll need that wiggle-room to readjust and get back-on-track.  Think of it this way. You purchased a Peloton bike with the Goal of losing Five Pounds per Month. But, one month, you dropped three pounds. Just because you didn’t reach that five-pound Goal doesn’t mean that you have to throw in the towel.

Have a compelling a “Why.”

As you kick-off the new year, I’m sure that you’re Focused on Goals like becoming healthier, having more money in Your bank account, or becoming a more respected leader.
But, without understanding “why” you want to Achieve these Goals, the chances of you staying Motivated will wane as the year goes on. Take a moment and align Your Goals with Your core values so that you have a deep and personal connection with them. When you’re “why” is connected and linked to you
personally, you’ll retain the ability to Achieve Your Goals. Just remember to Focus on Your “why.” Don’t buy a new house just because you’re around 30 and that’s what 30-year-
olds are supposed to do. Instead, you buy a home because you’re emotionally and financially ready and want to have stability for Your family.

Don’t Go it Alone.

Staying Focused and Motivated is no easy task. Even worse, when you experience setbacks it takes a lot of effort to pull Yourself back-up. One Positive way to make Your Goals
just a little bit easier is by surrounding Yourself with like-minded people. Find those who have Your back and have similar Goals, such as a friend or community. They’ll also
hold you accountable and push-you when you waiver.

At the same time, if you feel that certain people are holding you back, then it’s time to put some distance between you and them. You may even have to avoid them altogether.

Be Consistent, Not Perfect

Early on in my Career, I wanted all of my work to be perfect. Because I was spending so much time obsessing over every little detail and constantly making adjustments, I was missing deadlines and falling way behind on my to-do-lists. I was exhausted and just wanted to quit.

Eventually, We realized that perfection isn’t Attainable and that it’s better to be Consistent. In other words, instead of trying to be perfect, I do my best and deliver quality work day-in and day-out.

Visualize the Dreams and Results.

Elite athletes are known for visualizing their performance in advance. In fact, they get so detailed that they can even see themselves executing the right moves and smell the
sweat dripping down their face afterward.

Take a cue from these athletes and visualize Your desired outcomes. If you like, you can also create a vision board to serve as a visual representation of Your Goals. It can also
remind you to stay Focused and on-course.

Seek out Positivity.

When you feel burned out and uninspired, take a step back and seek out Positive energy to revive Your Motivation. This could be by hanging out with Positive people, starting a
gratitude journal, watching a YouTube video that makes you laugh, meditating, or just going for a walk outside.

You can “fill Your mind with uplifting and inspiring information” by reading or listening to a “book on a Positive topic that will give you a boost.” Pierce also recommends speaking Positive Affirmations. “Regardless of what is going on around you, speak out loud what you want to happen,” writes Pierce. “Write out an affirmation that you can say
daily and put it up somewhere that you are sure to see it every day, like Your bathroom mirror or Your refrigerator.”

Go Easy on Yourself.

Finally, don’t beat Yourself up when you have a bad day or get off-track a bit. It happens. Instead, back away and reflect on what needs to change so that you can remain Focused and Motivated going forward. Think about if there were any mistakes you made and how you can learn from them.
