Today marks Geeta Jayanti, a significant festival honoring the Bhagavad Gita, a revered scripture in Hinduism, which commemorates the day Lord Krishna imparted its teachings to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. Falling on the Shukla Ekadashi of the Margashirsha month in the Hindu calendar, this celebration is rich in spiritual significance and typically occurs in November or December.


Devotees engage in recitations of verses from the Bhagavad Gita, perform worship ceremonies, and delve into discussions about its profound teachings. This scripture stands as a spiritual guide, offering wisdom on life, duty, righteousness, and the pursuit of self-realization.


The Gita's teachings continue to resonate globally, emphasizing the importance of fulfilling responsibilities with dedication while maintaining a balanced and detached mindset toward outcomes. It's a day for reflection, learning, and seeking spiritual enlightenment through the timeless wisdom of this sacred scripture.


This year, a particularly special Ekadashi, Mokshada Ekadashi, aligns with Geeta Jayanti on December 23rd (also observed on December 22nd due to calendar differences). Geeta Jayanti uniquely celebrates the birth anniversary of the Bhagavad Gita. Lord Krishna's discourse to Arjuna took place on the Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Agahan month in Dwapar Yuga, hence the tradition of celebrating this date as Geeta Jayanti.


Astrologers like Pt. Manish Sharma from Ujjain highlight the significance of Ekadashis for those observing fasts. In a standard year, there are 24 Ekadashis, but in years with an Adhikamas, such as when it occurred in the month of Sawan this year, there are 26 Ekadashis.


The month of Margashirsha, known as Aghan, holds particular reverence as a form of Lord Krishna. Special worship is offered to Lord Krishna during this month, with morning rituals involving the consecration of Bal Gopal in households. Devotees anoint Bal Gopal with water, milk, adorn with necklaces, flowers, and clothes, apply sandalwood tilak, and offer butter, sugar candy, and basil while chanting the mantra "Krim Krishnaya Namah."


Observing this Ekadashi is believed to grant eternal virtues, fostering ongoing happiness, peace, and prosperity within families. Devotees observe a fast for Lord Vishnu and Mahalakshmi, performing worship rituals in the morning and evening.


Mokshada Ekadashi spans from 9:21 am on December 22nd to 7:41 am on December 23rd. As per scriptures, the Ekadashi Tithi at sunrise on the 23rd holds significance for the entire day.


This Ekadashi offers salvation to ancestors of those fasting and bestows success, happiness, and peace by Lord Vishnu's grace. It's believed that Lord Krishna had informed Yudhishthir about all the Ekadashis of the year.


Devotees are encouraged to recite the Geeta on Mokshada Ekadashi. Even if unable to recite the entire scripture, reciting selected chapters holds significance. Donations for the care of cows in cowsheds, feeding green grass to cows, and donating Geeta books to temples are also customary acts on this auspicious day.
