Hard work means that you take the effort and work really hard to come at the end result without any shortcuts whatsoever and smart work means that you get the task done with as much shortcuts as possible making the work easily completed. So hard work, If you look at a training institute would mean the faculties making a new question paper for each exam after going through the portion every time and smart work would be repetitive questions from the previous year paper to the next year.

Similarly like this, the management area also has hardworking and smart working managers. We can see that smart work is very desirable when it comes to the time constraints and hard work is desirable when it comes to the quality of the work. Some managers make sure they work really hard and come up with solutions or devise strategies after so much of efforts, but then this would mean that the time available for execution is very limited. When we look at smart managers, they may end up following the same strategy as last time a similar assignment or problem had arisen, this would mean that the strategy implementation has a lot of time, but there is no guarantee it will work because an analysis of the current situation has not been done.

Thus, the idea criteria of mangers is a mix or combination of both. A manager who is both smart working and hard working will be able to draw the ideal line between the two, thus ensuring the ideal quality of the work and the ideal time for implementation of the work.
