The kind of happiness that brings a smile to our face—but to a condition that arises in a larger context of actions, conditions, and behavior. To live well is to be good. A happy life is a good life, on this account, and a good life is a virtuous life.


“Happiness is the highest good,” Aristotle wrote. And happiness is realized through the practice of virtue. Happiness casts its gaze outward and is obtainable through the cultivation of moral habits.

The story of the beautiful Narcissus is a cautionary tale. He drowns in his own reflection because in his love of himself, there is no room for others. For Aristotle, friendship is central to human well-being. Human flourishing isn’t possible without it.

“Friends enhance our ability to think and to act,” Aristotle wrote. This isn’t just any way of thinking or acting but consists of good judgment and virtuous behavior. Friends hold us up to our better selves, directing us toward the good.

You need friends to do good and without them, you are likely to fail. It is a failure to be virtuous, and without virtue, you can’t be happy. Narcissus drowns because in his self-love, there is no one to bring him to develop his moral character.

WE find happiness with our friends, if we expect it there. The workplace guarantees it, too, if we go in search of it. Happiness visits us in our solitude and in our myriad involvements. Wherever we are, so is happiness, unless we've chosen to keep it out. Our attitudes are powerful, and will prevail in all matters, with all people.

Happiness is contagious. It spreads quickly when shared freely. When it catches up with us, the cares of the day are immediately lightened.

We have lessons to learn in this life, and we have essential contributions to make, contributions that will ease another's burdens, foster happiness in another's heart. Likewise, someone else's lessons may well encourage our own happiness.

For him, and most of his contemporaries, happiness referred not to an emotion but the long-term pattern of action, the sum of which was your moral character. It is the habits of virtue that are acquired over years of exercising the appropriate virtues.

The purpose of life is to live and let live. The societal living is possible when there are communal harmony and feeling of brotherhood among its members. The institutions of family and marriage contribute to the harmonious living in a society. Peaceful coexistence is the key to a successful life.

Happiness is good. It provides us with a sense of optimism, a “take on the world” attitude and a positivity that can be infectious. According to a recent study, everyone attempts to find happiness in three ways: Doing good for others; doing things you’re good at; and doing things that are good for you. Moreover, those who are the most optimistic, are the happiest overall.

And the research doesn’t stop there: happiness is closely tied to being happy with your job, your closest relationships and taking care of yourself physically and emotionally.

Effects on Your Health

For most people, happiness is a sense of purpose and well-being. This positive attitude translates to a variety of effects on a person’s health both physically and mentally, including:

- Opening a person’s mind to positivity: Optimism and vitality are critical to a person’s well-being.

- Improving a person’s problem-solving ability: Positive-minded individuals believe they “can” and want to achieve their goals.

- Building physical, intellectual and social resources: This allows people to learn better because they seek other positive-minded people.

- Protecting your health: Happiness lowers your risk for cardiovascular disease, lowers your blood pressure, enables better sleep, improves your diet, allows you to maintain a normal body weight through regular exercise and reduces stress.

Ways to Improve Your Well-Being

According to some research, well-being can be learned by practicing the following:

- Resilience, a function of the brain, resides in the ability to bounce back from adversity.

- Positive outlook lies in a person’s ability to see the positive, both in people and in experiences.

- Attention, or a lack of, can affect a person’s well-being. Being more attentive and using better listening skills can make a person more focused and positive.

Ans. I found that a larger income generally makes people happier—but not always. It's not just how much you make that determines how satisfied you are with your life, but how that money relates to your desires. You might say that happiness is equal to what you have divided by what you want.

Living a Rich Life:

Living richly means figuring out what to spend your time, money, and energy on—and what to ignore. Since you can’t have everything, you have to prioritize. This means spending money on things that matter to you—and skimping on things that don’t.

Psychologists generally agree that a life well-lived is rich in:

1.Security: It’s hard to be happy when you’re constantly worrying about how to pay the bills. If you have money, you don’t have to worry about those things.

2.Relationships: True wealth comes from relationships, not from dollars and cents. Wealthy or poor, people with five or more close friends are more apt to describe themselves as happy than those with fewer.

3.Experiences: As explained in the Note on How Money Affects Happiness, memories tend to grow more positive with time, but Stuff usually drops in value—both actual value and perceived value.

Remember these three pillars of happiness and you can build a rich life even on a limited income.

In a perfect world we would all have a dream job that’s not only enjoyable but meaningful as well. A job where we’re also happy and satisfied....while making millions of dollars. That's the life, right?

When asked, 38 percent of U.S. employees reported that they were very satisfied with their current job. So is that dream we are searching for something that can actually be achieved?

Absolutely -- if you follow these tips on how to have a happy career.

1. Don’t just “follow your passion.”

While passion does play a part in having a happy career, it’s not the key ingredient. Just because you’re passionate about something doesn’t mean that you’re going to have a successful and fulfilling career.

For example, I recently caught an episode of Chopped: All-Stars. The celebrity contestants were excellent chefs. Being truly great at what you do doesn’t mean that you have the passion or talent to open your own business. These chefs are fantastic, but they maybe shouldn't open their own restaurants.

Passion will only get you so far if you don’t have the skills or market to cash-in on what you love.

2. Do what you’re good at.

This segues into my next point. Do something that you’re actually good at - or at least have the potential to be good at. The reason? It gives you a sense of achievement that allows you to negotiate things like salary, flexibility and benefits.

Again, going back to Chopped. The celebrities exceeded my expectations, but that doesn’t mean that they could go toe-to-toe with an acclaimed chef.

3. Do work that’s engaging.

According to the job characteristics model job satisfaction is largely determined by how engaging the job itself is. The model breaks engaging into five main variables: variety, sense of completion, autonomy, feedback and a sense to contribution that your work affects people’s lives.

4. More income is better - to a point.

While it’s been said that money can’t buy happiness, higher income does lead to higher feelings of happiness. This makes sense since having a decent paycheck alleviates the stress of worrying about money concerns.

However, this only remains true up to a certain point. A study from Princeton calculated that once you reach about $75,000 in annual income more income doesn’t actually make you any happier. The study was based as a single earner and would be about $83,000 today.

5. Help others.


Evidence has found that helping others leads to life satisfaction. People who volunteer are less depressed and healthier, while random acts of kindness makes the giver happier.

According to a global survey, those who donated to a charity are just as satisfied with their lives as the people who earn twice as much!

In some careers you’re engaged at work -- think doctor, nurse or firefighter, careers that are obviously meaningful to the world. But maybe your work doesn't seem meaningful to you and feels like it's just your job.


If you aren't that your career is meaningful, consider starting or joining a company that is socially conscious. Find one that gives back to the community. Alternatively, you can start volunteering.

6. Work-life balance is key.


Spending more time with your friends and family, and less time in the office, is a key component for satisfaction, even if said friends and family are a pain to deal with.

Less demanding work is becoming increasingly popular, especially among millennials. Having a healthy work-life balance prevents you from creating burned out and keeps you energized.

You need time and flexibility to enjoy your life, tend to your personal affairs and take a much-needed breather from work to recharge.

7. Find variety by merging education, autonomy and security.


There is no satisfaction in doing the same thing every, single day. Consider if the security is worth being so bored.

People who have even a little variety in their work are happier. Those who have the opportunity to learn new skills or develop their existing skill set regularly report higher levels of happiness,  saying overall well-being benefited from the variety.

Additionally, having more autonomy makes you happier at work. Research has found that people “were nearly two and a half times more likely to take a job that gave them more autonomy. People were offered ways to gain more influence and still chose the job with autonomy."

Studies show that if you believe that your job puts you in danger your happiness at work is going to decrease. I am not sure this is true. The police and firefighters I know seem really happy to me, and their lives are in danger quite often. Other studies show that men and women in these jobs have a high value placed on camaraderie -- which also gives satisfaction.

However, those who feel that their jobs are in jeopardy are not too happy nor satisfied. Jobs that are stable and safe are the ones that result in higher levels of happiness.

8. Work with people you like.


This is pretty obvious. If you don’t get along with your colleagues or boss, you’re not going to be happy at work. After all, nobody wants to spend 40-plus hours a week with people that they can’t stand.

Having friends at work keeps you engaged, productive, and happy.

9. Eliminate the negatives.


To be happy at work you also need to eliminate or lessen things that make work unpleasant. Maybe a long commute. If you can't change the long commute, make it more pleasant in some way.

Long hours, unfair pay and job insecurity are not going to help you achieve your goals. These issues will not help you feel better with a work/life balance.

This may sound obvious, but we’re so focused on a career with positive factors that other goals are often overlooked. You may have a meaningful job that pays well, but the commute and long hours may outweigh those positives.

I don’t know one person who doesn’t want or need more money. Whether it’s for a new car, a holiday or just to pay off those credit cards – people would always appreciate some extra pennies in their pockets. However, is having a job that pays really well but offers not much else really the key to long term overall happiness?

It’s an age old question, and everyone is different. The term ‘happiness’ is defined many different ways to various people. To some, happiness is simply having a roof over your head and food on your table. To others (and probably many others) happiness comes with having nice things such as technology, nice clothes, cars etc. To afford the finer things in life, we usually want a high salary – but at what point does job satisfaction take a back seat to accommodate for a mammoth salary? And is it possible to have the best of both worlds?

Various factors come in to the debate of job satisfaction vs high salary. At first, the answer to overall happiness seems to be fairly obvious: Get a job that you love and work your way up to earning a lot. However, there are other factors to consider. For example, what stage are you at currently in your life? If you don’t have responsibilities back at home such as children then you might be more open to working long hours for a high earning job. If you’ve just moved in with your partner you’re going to want to spend more time at home considering how much you’ll be spending on bills and rent/mortgage. Another factor to consider is where you work. In cities like London, Paris and New York, a five to six-figure salary will be enough to cover the cost of living. After putting away savings, paying bills and other costs – how much do you have left over to spend on yourself? And is this an amount you’d be happy with?

We spend approximately a third of our lives at work. We want to be happy while we’re there. If you can’t seem to get yourself out of bed in the morning because you dread the job so much, generally speaking it’s not going to get much better further down the road. Everyone has both ups and downs in their jobs – but if you’re having more downs than ups, is the higher salary actually worth it? As Jim Blasingame says on Forbes, “If you can’t be happy without money and [material] stuff, you aren’t likely to be happy with it”. This is speaking with the assumption that a higher paying salary means misery – it really doesn’t. A lot of people who have higher salaries can’t get enough of their jobs.

Age is another element of the job satisfaction vs. high salary debate. Stereotypically speaking, if you’re younger then you’re more likely to tolerate working more hours for slightly less money (with the hope of career advancement on the cards and general job satisfaction). If you have a job with a good amount of accountability then you deserve the higher wage. What actually is ‘Job Satisfaction? Things such as progression and career advancement, good training, great colleagues, decent perks and job security all come under that ‘satisfaction’ umbrella.

Another thing you should think about if you’re doing some self-evaluation right now is why you applied for the job you currently have in the first place. Was it because of the wage or the role/responsibilities? If it was both, have those stances changed now if you’ve been in your job for a while?

Happiness tends to be achieved depending on the attitude of the person seeking it. If you can go to work and laugh, have fun and find joy in the work you do, then you have basic career happiness right there. If you’re emotionally suffering at your job every day, then no amount of money in the world will ever make you content. Maybe it’s time for you to break up with your job for good – here are the signs that you should.

Here are eight organizational tips that will help you reach your long-term goals at work.

1. Focus on what’s important

Remind yourself of your long-term goals and revise them when necessary.  Set daily priorities to meet your goals.  Keep photos of your family or inspirational pictures nearby.

2. Make lists

Make daily, weekly and monthly to-do lists of important tasks.  Review your daily priorities at the beginning of each day.

3. Manage your time well

Schedule quiet time at work to accomplish tasks that need extra concentration.  Do your most challenging work when your energy is at its highest; save less demanding work for other times.  If you tend to procrastinate, focus on the sense of accomplishment you’ll feel when the job is done.  Use commute time to plan your day’s activities.

4. Use calendars and planners

Check your work calendar daily to review your activities and avoid conflicts.  Write down all commitments in pencil rather than trusting your memory.  Use planning and scheduling forms and software to help you map out long-term projects.

5. Delegate tasks

Assign tasks to others when the task is not on your level of expertise.  Provide adequate training and feedback on assigned projects.

6. Manage your mail and phone calls

Sort incoming mail into categories by priority or action.  Use voice mail to screen phone calls.

7. Reduce clutter

Clear your workspace.  Keep only the most critical items and information you need daily on the top of your desk.  Archive resource materials you rarely use.  Toss out duplicate information and materials that will soon be outdated.  Leave blank space on bookshelves for growth.

8. Stay organized

Organize files by priority and keep the most important ones within arm’s reach.  Spend 15 minutes at the end of each day clearing your desk and 15 minutes the next morning planning for your day’s activities.  Review items one through seven on this list.

#Why follow a daily Routine
