If you ask any Successful Entrepreneur or Business person what they did to get where they are today, almost all of them will say that they had a goal and set out to achieve it. Despite all the obstacles and complications that came his way, he would say that he did whatever it took to achieve the goal. The one thing these people have in common with each other is that they all have some "RoadMap to Success". Whether it was something as simple as writing down all of their goals or even going more in-depth into what they needed to do to reach their goals, they did it all. An important thing to remember is that everyone has a different definition of Success, so people have a different path or "RoadMap" to get them there. In this post, I'll break down the seven steps that any good RoadMap to Success should have.

What is a RoadMap to Success and why does it matter?

The RoadMap to Success is a step-by-step guide to achieving your goals and what you're going to do to make them happen. This guide will set you up for Success and hold you accountable. As I mentioned earlier, your RoadMap will be different from everyone else's RoadMap. I know setting SMART goals is scary and it can make your goals seem overwhelming. This process breaks down your SMART goals and makes them feel attainable.

How to Create Your RoadMap to Success

Maybe you've written down your SMART goals, maybe you're doing nothing to achieve them. This feeling may be because they seem too difficult to accomplish, or because you don't have an end goal in mind. The reasons may go on. Well, keep reading as I'm about to lay out the seven steps you need to take on your RoadMap to Success.

Step 1: Define Your Mission

Your mission is your "big picture" or the overall goal you want to achieve. In this step, you need to be specific and go into detail about the result you want to create.

The most important part of this step is writing your WHY. Why are you doing this? Why do you want to achieve this? Your "why" should drive you forward, especially when you forget you're doing it.

If you want to give yourself one more incentive to keep going, you should define an aversive consequence. Nothing propels you forward like the prospect of an adverse outcome.

Step 2: Define the end of the RoadMap

This step is where you define your overall end goals. If you set a deadline for yourself, you're much more likely to stick to it.

If you're new to goal setting, I suggest setting the time frame smaller because you're still learning the process. Worse comes to worse you can always stretch the timeline a bit.

If you're not new to goal setting, but you're new to creating a RoadMap to Success, your time frame can be years, months, weeks, or even days. Just be honest with yourself.

Step 3: Define any accomplishments, achievements or awards

By doing so, you are giving yourself something to look forward to throughout the journey. The two types of achievements you should define in this section are outcome-based and behavior-based.

Outcome-based achievements are those things that are under your influence, but not under your control. An example of an outcome-based consequence would be winning a medal or a holiday based on how well you performed. It can even be something small, like treating yourself to a spa day once you've achieved a specific part of your goal.

Behavior-based goals are in your control. An example of this would be giving yourself a day off. You can set a specific time to work on your goal, and once that time is up, take a short break.

It's essential to spread out your milestones and achievements so that they inspire you to keep going. Reward yourself with something you really enjoy.

Step 4: Define the Process

Now is the time to define the actions you will take to reach the desired results. This step may involve a little research into how other people have achieved your goal. By doing this you will get some idea of what you have to do.

Another thing you should think about doing is defining the person you need to become in order to accomplish your goal. If you do this, you'll be more inclined to change your current mindset and change it so that it aligns with your overall goal.

Step 5: Define Constraints

Every good Entrepreneur and Business person has gone through failure to get where they are today. It's how you handle failures that ultimately drive them apart. Brainstorm a bit and think of each obstacle. Write them all down. You will be able to prepare yourself for the challenges that may lie ahead and also take the opportunity to grow from them.
