Fostering Leadership and Teamwork Skills in School Children
Ananya Bhaduri
Hello readers! Ananya, this side. Today, I will share some of my personal experiences in the classroom. Before starting my content writing journey, I was a teacher in a CBSE school. While observing students during class activities, an important thing truly caught my attention. Some students naturally came forward to help their classmates with group projects, discussions or sports activities; on the other hand, some students were slowly developing their confidence to express their ideas over time. Then I realised that leadership is not a factor which children suddenly become accustomed to like adults, but it starts developing during the school years.
Leadership is an important skill for students to achieve success in both academic and professional life. Developing leadership skills from an early age helps children to become confident, responsible and proactive. Schools have an important role in shaping these young minds and provide an exceptional foundation for leadership development.
According to the National Education Policy 2020, the CBSE Schools should be committed to nurturing leadership qualities in students as a part of the vision for holistic education. In this blog, we will highlight the importance of leadership in schools, strategies to develop leadership among students, and how the school helps in developing leadership skills.
What is a Leadership Skill?
The leadership skills refer to a list of characteristics which help people direct, lead and encourage others to reach shared objectives. These skills include:
Effective communication.
Teamwork.
Collaboration.
Decision-making and problem-solving.
Confidence and initiative.
Responsibility and accountability.
Leadership is not about controlling or dominating; it’s about motivating students and making moral decisions in different circumstances.
When students have strong leadership capabilities, they will take part actively in class, such as mediating conflicts, and participate in group tasks.
Why are Leadership Skills Important for Student Growth?
Leadership skills play an essential role in a student’s overall development. As per the CBSE curriculum, schools should focus on leadership training and teamwork for the overall student growth. Leadership programme in school enhances the self-confidence of students as these trainings take the students out of their comfort zone and make them believe in themselves.
A shy student who once hesitated to speak during class discussions may gradually become confident enough to lead a team project or address an audience during school events. These experiences help students overcome fear and develop self-belief from an early age.
Leadership encourages students to speak up confidently and share their ideas without hesitation, make decisions strategically and take collective responsibility. These are known as growth experiences, which also improve communication, teamwork skills, and collaborative learning. These tools are vital not only in classroom activities but also in life outside school.
It is also seen that students who actively participate in leadership activities often achieve excellent academic performance, as it develops critical thinking, confidence and discipline.
Leadership develops empathy and a sense of cooperation, and leadership in schools teaches students to respect all the different thinking and mutual working with a common goal.
Therefore, these developments of leadership skills help students to become thoughtful and responsible citizens who are ready to stimulate change in their communities.
Strategies to Develop Leadership Skills in Students

Here are some strategies which help students learn leadership qualities. These are as follows:
Collaboration and Teamwork
Collective activities in nearby localities help the students to develop teamwork skills. To develop the sense of collaboration and teamwork, teachers as well as parents have a major role, as they should encourage communication with others and participation in different activities.
Motivating Group Activities
To learn leadership in schools, students should take part in group activities like cricket. Football or other sports where many people play together. This can motivate them to use leadership qualities to guide other students.
Focus on Communication Skills
To improve leadership quality, students must communicate better. To improve their communication skills, students can practice at home to learn how to be friendly and request something.
Enhance Confidence
Students can take part in dialogue sessions with other students to build confidence. Once they learn to communicate with others, they can express themselves. This is an initial factor through which students can show leadership qualities, which makes them more responsible.
Learn Negotiation
Students should learn to say simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to an offer. This will help them learn the skill of negotiation. As a result, during communication with others, students can implement the strategy to abide by the leadership.
Decision-Making Capacity
This is one of the vital qualities of a good leader. Leadership programmes in schools help students learn about decision-making by supporting them in thinking critically about a specific problem.
Planning and Brainstorming
One of the important qualities of a good leader is the ability to effectively brainstorm. Using these skills, students can learn to work as a whole.
Every student has the potential to be a leader. By teaching them about taking responsibilities, initiatives, and managing difficult situations, teachers and parents help to equip them for the future.
How can Schools help in Developing Leadership Skills among Students?
Schools are the best place to teach leadership development. Here are the effective ways that highlight the development of leadership in schools.
Leadership Curriculum
The CBSE Schools are now following the curriculum that enhances critical thinking and independent learning. Also, schools offer a structured as well as a flexible approach, which allows students to take responsibility for their learning journey. Apart from this, in many classrooms, nowadays, there is an integration of leadership training into everyday learning. Through project-based activities and interactive sessions, students improve decision-making and management skills.
Experiential Learning
One of the best ways to foster leadership in students is through experience. There are various hands-on approaches, such as debates, group discussions, and community service projects. These activities help students step out of their comfort zones and gradually develop leadership qualities.
Motivating Teamwork and Collaboration
An effective leader should have an idea of the value of teamwork. Students often develop leadership when working in teams through sports and physical activities, science and technology workshops and art and cultural programmes. These approaches will foster cooperation, mutual respect and problem-solving skills among students.
Leadership Roles and Responsibilities
Schools now empower students by assigning leadership roles such as class representatives, event coordinators or student council members. By taking responsibility, students learn to manage tasks efficiently and develop a sense of accountability.
Leadership and teamwork skills play an important role in a student's overall growth and future endeavours. Schools are now nurturing leadership abilities through experiential learning, teamwork and personal development. These ensure that students will become responsible and proactive leaders. One thing we need to remember is that every child is unique, and leadership development is not a one-path journey- it needs personalised strategies which reflect individual strengths and growth potential. Therefore, both teachers and parents have a major role in this development, and together they can help the student to learn about leadership potential.
If we encourage these young minds to encompass their capabilities and accept challenges, we lay the foundation for a responsible generation that can contribute positively to society.
