Education Industry and its Teaching Staff Condition Due to COVID-19 Bhawana Aggarwal

Education Industry and its Teaching Staff Condition Due to COVID-19

Bhawana Aggarwal

https://bit.ly/3bjgL4K

Objective:

In this Pandemic Era, it is important to understand the pain of the Education Industry. As Schools, Colleges and other Educational institutions are not working as their regular working procedure. They can’t allow their students to come and conduct classes and examinations as before. We are trying to understand how their lives change due to Covid-19? And how difficult is it to educate students online?

About:

This virus spreads through individuals to other individuals (through touch, saliva, etc.), so many countries around the world simultaneously ask their people to apply social distance, even physical distance to inhibit the growth of COVID 19. This has also inhibited educational activities that exist throughout the world. Not only were the activities of educational institutions even to the world of business, the world of tourism, and health affected. Most governments around the world have temporarily closed educational institutions in an effort to curb the spread of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Industry:

Covid-19 has disrupted the education industry and created a biggest challenge. Several prior theories had to be discarded considering that the current education system is undergoing its biggest shift ever; it has never been interrupted at the fundamental level globally, until now. Entrepreneurs across countries are in the process of building tools and programs that would help students navigate and learn through simpler processes, this is with consideration of the fact that Gen Z and Gen Alpha are going to be at the receiving end of this massive transformation.

According to a survey over 1.5 million schools in India closed down because of the Pandemic as large-scale digital transformation is not possible. Only 25% of the total population have an internet connection during 2019, but it increased by 50% during 2020. If we are talking about the Rural area, the number of internet connections are very less; it is around 5% of the total rural population. So it is very difficult to transform the complete education system digitally. Following is a chart showing the internet penetration rate:

There are many students who do not even visit their colleges once after taking admissions and it's already one year passed. But university students can handle this pressure as they have knowledge about the procedures, but we should consider those young students who are very young and don’t know how to learn things by themselves.

On the other hand, if we look at the industry as a whole. We can find many positive changes such as now there are no geographical boundaries for the teachers and students. Even in these harsh times many people want to learn new skills to get a better job and increase their knowledge. Some education institutes who already work digitally flourish more such as Byju’s, Unacademic etc. As a result the whole industry is able to flourish.

According to study it was estimated that the online education market in India was set to grow to $2 billion (Rs 14,694 crore), with 9.6 million users by 2021, up from $247.4 million (Rs 1,870 crore) and 1.6 million users in 2016. The coronavirus-induced lockdown further propelled the market demand for EdTech players. India has now emerged as the second biggest market for massive open online courses (MOOC) in the world after the US.

Impact on Teaching and Non-Teaching Staff:

It has become very difficult for teachers to teach students online. It is more difficult to grab students' attention during online sessions. To understand the situation more we survey some teacher and some of their responses are below:

“The pressure on us right now is enormous,” said one teacher. “It is difficult to manage healthy breaks away from work because parents and children and our leaders all require so much from us right now.”

Another said: “My life consists of remote learning. Recording lessons, responding to work, providing feedback, attending meetings, and everything else in between.”

Additionally, almost three-quarters of school teachers surveyed expressed concerns about the remote learning negatively affecting students’ emotional wellbeing.

Regarding school attendance, 15 percent of all primary and secondary school teachers reported their students always attended class, while 16 per cent reported their students were attending online classes only half the time.

On work standard,56 per cent of all primary and secondary school teachers agreed students were producing the same standard of work before remote learning, 37 per cent disagreed.

But the results weren’t all negative, with some teachers reporting students who are easily distracted or disruptive in the classroom, engaged with their work better when working independently at home.

But if we look from the point of job security and their income, we have to divide the whole teaching staff into two categories:

If we look at the teachers of small institutions who are not able to survive in these harsh conditions, they lose their jobs. Many of them are forced to find any other measure for their livelihood.

On the other hand, if we talk about the teacher or institution who can afford online education and belongs to a good and reputed institution are able to get more progress. Now due to Pandemic they can teach as much as students they want at the same time. Now there are no boundations of geographical locations. Their jobs are more secure than anyone else.

If we are talking about the non teaching staff many staff members lose their job as they are not required any more, while many individuals who are typically employed to perform non-essential duties may be able to transfer their skills to provide valuable services such as childcare and meal delivery.

Impact on students:

This global Pandemic affects the 90% of the total world student’s community. Slowly taking online class after some time in the lockdown period onwards. Initially Online classes feel better. Where there was a complete change in the situation of the class’s atmosphere. After a month we came to know that there are lots of disadvantages and advantages to this type of education. It also stops the students personality development and peer learning process. Now we came to know that this virus is not a blessing to students but a foreshadow of the student’s further life to adjust the Online mode of education.

But it has not only negative impacts but also positive impacts such as now students can access more courses with less time and money spent which saves their huge time and money. They can learn what they want without any geographical boundaries.

Hence, Covid-19 has some negative as well as positive impacts on the education industry as well as students and teacher’s life.

Employee Performance Appraisal and Motivation Shruti Priya

#Employee Performance  Appraisal and Motivation

Shruti Priya

Motivation can be defined as the work performed by managers to induce subordinates to act in the desired manner by satisfying their needs and desires. It is the process that energizes employees and propels them to pursue their goals. Well-designed and well-executed performance appraisals have a strong motivational impact. In many companies, appraisals are used for distributing rewards such as bonuses, annual pay raises, and promotions. Appraisals have the power to motivate employees because they provide several interconnected benefits. Adding to this, other significant reasons for using performance appraisal are:

 Used for promotion, and retention decisions

 Training needs are identified

 Links performance management to company goals

 The manager can correct deficiencies and reinforce strengths

 With appraisals, employee’s can review career plans

Researchers show that it is more effective when performance appraisal is tied with rewards and termination of lower performers. This can be understood from the reinforcement theory, which indicates that the rewarded behavior is repeated. Also, tying appraisal results to rewards may lead to the perception that performance is rewarded. Today, performance appraisal has been extended beyond the rating of employees to aspects such as motivation.  Employee performance has been the prime focus of human resource managers, resulting in several performance appraisal techniques to help establish employee performance.

Steps of performance appraisal include:

1. Sets work/performance standards: Different types of standards are-

 Goals / Targets

 Competencies

 Behaviors

2. Assessing (techniques) performance: There are several techniques which companies or organization use for the assessment of their employees, Some of the methods for evaluation are:-

 Graphic Rating Scale- The simplest and most popular method for appraising performance. A scale that lists several traits and ranges of performance for each. Identifying the score that best describes the level of performance for each trait.

 Alternation Ranking - Ranking employees from best to worst on a particular trait, choosing highest, then lowest, until all are ranked.

 Paired Comparison- Ranking employees by making a chart of all possible pairs of the employees for each trait, indicating which is the better employee of the pair.

 Forced Distribution- Predetermined percentages of rates are placed in various performance categories. The technique follows the Bell Curve approach.

 Critical Incident Method-Keeping a record of uncommonly good or undesirable examples related to employee’s work-related behavior and reviewing it with the employee at predetermined times.

 Management by Objectives (MBO)- Refers to a multistep companywide goal-setting and appraisal program. It requires the manager to set specific, measurable, relevant goals with each employee and then periodically discuss the latter’s progress toward these goals.

3. Provides feedback to the employee: appraisals can be an essential tool to give feedback and aid in employee development.

However, if performance appraisal ratings are not accurate, appraisals can be a significant cause of reward unfairness. When performance management is handled less positively, employees may find it demotivating. If feedback is more negative without any illustration for improvement can cause disengagement of employees. Some of the errors in performance appraisal are:

 Unclear standards- Too open to interpretation

 Halo Effect - When a rating on one trait biases the rating on other traits

 Central Tendency - Tendency to rate all employees the same way, such as average

 Leniency or Strictness - Tendency to rate all as either high or low

 Recency Effects Rater Error - Recent events blind your judgment and forget past incidents

Now the question arises, how to improve performance management in the company?

There are several things that can be done to improve performance management and motivate employees to work more efficiently towards their goals.

1. Shift focus on feedback, i.e., instead of pointing on what is wrong, focus on the area that can be improved.

2. Offer training and development opportunities

3. Take technical support such as human resource information system to provide real-time feedback and to minimizing error

4. Try to meet higher-level psychological needs of the employees, such as, recognition which is one of the most potent forms of motivation

5. Increasing performance-based appraisal can contribute to the employees’ job satisfaction

6. Conducting the Appraisal Meeting serves as the key medium through which the rater gives feedback to the employees

Annual employee appraisal is critical for any company to evaluate employee performance. Almost every industry has an appraisal method; only the way of performing varies from one manager to another, but the standardized assessment system is essential for the company’s benefit. An established employee appraisal program is necessary to get the most out of them.

Does Spirituality make you Happy by Anshika Motwani

Does Spirituality make you Happy

Anshika Motwani

Scientists have found, again and again, that those with a spiritual practice or who follow religious beliefs tend to be happier than those who don’t. Study after study has found that religious people tend to be less depressed and less anxious than nonbelievers, better able to handle the vicissitudes of life than nonbelievers. A 2015 survey by researchers at the London School of Economics and the Erasmus University Medical Center in the Netherlands found that participating in a religious organization was the only social activity associated with sustained happiness—even more than volunteering for a charity, taking educational courses or participating in a political or community organization. It’s as if a sense of spirituality and an active, social religious practice were an effective vaccine against the virus of unhappiness.
The same goes for the protective qualities of religious belief and spirituality. Some experts think that believing in a religion gives you a greater sense of purpose and meaning in life than a secular viewpoint alone does, and that can help carry you through the low periods and elevate the higher ones. It could be that belief in an afterlife—something nearly all mainstream religions have in common—can make you happier in this one, knowing that you’re headed for something better.
Indeed, there appears to be something to the idea that faith makes us happier.
