Career in Foreign Services:

1) Definition:

• The Indian Foreign Service (IFS) is the administrative diplomatic civil service under the Central Civil Services (Group A & B) of the executive branch of the Government of India.

• Indian Foreign Service officers are responsible for managing the external affairs of the country.

• Their role is a diplomatic one and includes the responsibility for developing trade and cultural relations.

• While in Foreign Assignments, they represent India in various countries and international organizations and protect India's interests, both at home and abroad on a wide variety of issues.

• Whereas in Home postings, they deal with bilateral political and economic issues specific to a region.

2) Job Opportunities:

• Embassies

• High Commissions

• Consulates

• Permanent Missions

• Multilateral organizations like UN

• Ministry of External Affairs

3) Process/Path:

• 10+2 and graduation can be done in any stream.

• Take the Union Public Service Commission (UPSE exam). Only the top scoring ones are selected. It consists of two phases, a preliminary and a main examination, both with different specifications.

• For selection and for any promotions, Interviews are conducted.
