What Is Case Study?
A case study is a research methodology that has commonly used in social sciences.
A case study is a research strategy and an empirical inquiry that investigates a phenomenon within its real-life context.
Case studies are based on an in-depth investigation of a single individual, group or event to explore the causes of underlying principles.
A case study is a descriptive and exploratory analysis of a person, group or event.
A case study research can be single or multiple case studies, includes quantitative evidence, relies on multiple sources of evidence and benefits from the prior development of theoretical propositions.
Case studies are analysis of persons, groups, events, decisions, periods, policies, institutions or other systems that are studied holistically by one or more methods.
Why Use Cases?
Many students are more inductive than deductive reasoners, which means that they learn better from examples than from logical development starting with basic principles. The use of case studies can therefore be a very effective classroom technique.
Case studies are have long been used in business schools, law schools, medical schools and the social sciences, but they can be used in any discipline when instructors want students to explore how what they have learned applies to real world situations. Cases come in many formats, from a simple “What would you do in this situation?” question to a detailed description of a situation with accompanying data to analyze. Whether to use a simple scenario-type case or a complex detailed one depends on your course objectives.
Most case assignments require students to answer an open-ended question or develop a solution to an open-ended problem with multiple potential solutions. Requirements can range from a one-paragraph answer to a fully developed group action plan, proposal or decision.
How To Make a Case Study?
·        Read and Examine the Case Thoroughly
·        Take notes, highlight relevant facts, underline key problems.
·        Focus Your Analysis
·        Identify two to five key problems.
·        Why do they exist?
·        How do they impact the organization?
·        Who is responsible for them?
·        Uncover Possible Solutions/Changes Needed
·        Review course readings, discussions, outside research, your experience.
·        Select the Best Solution
·        Consider strong supporting evidence, pros, and cons. Is this solution realistic?
Introduction
Identify the key problems and issues in the case study.
Formulate and include a thesis statement, summarizing the outcome of your analysis in 1–2 sentences.
Background
Set the scene: background information, relevant facts, and the most important issues.
Demonstrate that you have researched the problems in this case study.
Evaluation of the Case
Outline the various pieces of the case study that you are focusing on.
Evaluate these pieces by discussing what is working and what is not working.
State why these parts of the case study are or are not working well.
Proposed Solution/Changes
Provide specific and realistic solution(s) or changes needed.
Explain why this solution was chosen.
Support this solution with solid evidence, such as:
Concepts from class (text readings, discussions, lectures)
Outside research
Personal experience (anecdotes)
Recommendations
Determine and discuss specific strategies for accomplishing the proposed solution.
If applicable, recommend further action to resolve some of the issues.
What should be done and who should do it?
Finalizing the Case
After you have composed the first draft of your case study analysis, read through it to check for any gaps or inconsistencies in content or structure:
Is your thesis statement clear and direct?
Have you provided solid evidence?
Is any component from the analysis missing?
When you make the necessary revisions, proofread and edit your analysis before submitting the final draft.
