1. HR has little responsibility beyond administration and bureaucracy
The Stereotype: HR is seen as the department responsible for paperwork and simple administrative tasks. (Employees, as well as organizational leadership, may not be aware of all of HR's strategic functions.)
Reality: Documentation, record-keeping, compliance, and oversight of policies and procedures are important functions of human resources, so there are many administrative tasks to be performed. However, the core responsibilities of HR are strategic.
The overall objective of HR is to find out how to get the best out of employees to help the organization achieve its goals. Human resources should play the role of a business partner and be relied upon to design and implement changes and courses of action needed to move the company forward. Ultimately, this positively affects the bottom line.
2. HR works in isolation
Stereotypes: HR is autonomous and does not need to collaborate with other departments. (Since some of HR's work is classified in nature, it has some boundaries with other departments to maintain confidentiality.)
Reality: HR cannot and does not work completely alone. In fact, HR should be collaborating with every department. They work closely with managers and leaders to share information and support organizational development through HR strategy.
3. HR acts only in the interest of the company
Stereotype: The HR department only cares about the security of the company. (Since HR is responsible for communicating and enforcing company policies, employees may view it as biased toward management.)
Reality: Competent HR professionals work with employees to resolve issues and ensure they are treated well while balancing the goals of the organization. They can follow company policies while also advocating for the workforce.
4. You don't need any special skills to get into HR
The Stereotype: Anyone Can Do HR. They are usually people who didn't get a job in sales or marketing. (HR has not always been a field that people initially planned to go into or pursue as a course of study, so many HR professionals have evolved into their roles.)
Reality: To be successful as an HR professional, you must possess various specialized skills, such as business acumen, data literacy and expertise in one or more HR functions. You must also be capable of people advocacy, interpersonal communication, and time management. In this field, you need to constantly work on developing these abilities and acquire new competencies.
5. HR spoils all the fun
Stereotype: HR is the "fun cop" and punishes people for making innocent jokes and pranks. (This comes from the fact that HR is in charge of enforcing employee conduct rules and is usually involved when someone is to be disciplined or terminated.)
Reality: HR professionals don't want to micromanage employee behavior or interactions, but they play an essential role in creating company culture. HR is tasked with helping to nurture an inclusive environment where all employees can feel safe, and people in HR generally believe strongly in supporting this.
6. HR is about hiring, reprimanding and firing employees
Stereotype: HR's main functions are to hire, reprimand, and fire employees. (These are the HR roles that are most obvious to employees, and little consideration is given to what else is within the scope of its responsibilities.)
Reality: There is much more to HR than this, as it oversees the entire employee lifecycle. HR should be behind the strategy of how to acquire, hire, and efficiently manage employees to drive the company's mission and goals toward success.
7. Cares about all HR policies and procedures
Conservatism: HR always focuses on policies and works by the book to fulfill their checklist. (Employees know that policies come from HR, but they may not understand their importance.)
Reality: HR needs to ensure compliance by implementing clear processes. Employment relationships must comply with various laws and regulations, and HR is responsible for understanding and navigating them. HR ensures that organizations meet their legal and ethical obligations to protect employees and the business. But again, this is just one of HR's many responsibilities.
8. There is no creativity involved in HR
The Stereotype: HR is uninteresting and boring because it's all about administration and policies. (Again, this comes from a perspective of HR that is limited to what it produces externally, not what it does behind the scenes.)
Reality: Fostering creativity in business has become even more important in recent years due to the constant changes taking place in the economy, global competition and expansion of flexible working options.
HR managers are often required to be creative and think outside the box to support innovation and come up with solutions and solutions to problems.

1. Hiring and Firing is all about HR: It is a very common misconception that says that the role of HR is only limited to hiring and firing employees. But in reality, HR people have a broad range of roles and responsibilities that they need to fulfill, including employee engagement, training and development, performance management, and creating a positive workplace culture.
2. HR is not a strategic role: People feel that HR is an administrative function that does not contribute to the strategic goals of the organization. However, HR plays an important role in talent management, workforce planning and organizational development, and all of the above are important for achieving strategic objectives.
3. HR is only for big companies: Some people think that HR is necessary only for huge organizations with 100 or 1000 employees. But did you know that even small businesses and organizations need human resources support to ensure compliance with employment laws, manage payroll and benefits, and create a positive workplace culture?
4. HR is not a technical field: Many people believe that HR does not require technical expertise/knowledge and is a soft skill-based field. But in reality, HR people need to be proficient in HR technologies, data analysis and other technical skills to make decisions and streamline HR processes.
5. HR is all about enforcing rules: In the eyes of some, HR is a disciplinary function that exists only to enforce rules and policies in the organization. However, HR's role is to support employees and help them succeed by providing them with all the necessary resources and possible help.
It is important to dispel these myths and recognize the important role that HR professionals play in creating a positive and productive workplace culture.
