Period Taboo: Why We Can't Talk About Menstruation

So, why is it so hard to talk about menstruation?
Each of us has the right to bodily autonomy. The ability to care for your body during menstruation is an essential part of this fundamental freedom. Yet an estimated 500 million people lack access to menstrual products and adequate facilities for menstrual health.
Poor menstrual health and hygiene undermines the fundamental rights of women, girls and menstruating people – including the right to work and go to school. It increases social and economic inequalities. Inadequate resources for managing menstruation, as well as patterns of exclusion and shame, undermine human dignity. Gender inequality, extreme poverty, humanitarian crises and harmful traditions can exacerbate deprivation and stigma.
Keeping this in mind, the theme for Menstrual Hygiene Day this year is "Making menstruation a common fact of life by 2030." The day is celebrated on the 28th day of the fifth month of the year as the menstrual cycle is of 28 days on an average and people menstruate for an average of five days every month.
There is broad agreement on what people need for good menstrual health. Essential Ingredients: A safe, acceptable and reliable supply for the management of menstruation; privacy to change content; secure and private wash facilities; More information to make informed choices. Comprehensive approaches that combine education with infrastructure and products and efforts to tackle stigma are most successful in achieving good menstrual health.
Global and national health and development policies should prioritize menstrual health, with investment reflecting the important role it plays in human rights, public health, gender equality and sustainable development. Schools, workplaces and public institutions must ensure that people can manage menstruation with comfort and dignity. Targeted policies should seek to eliminate period poverty, in which low-income women and girls struggle to afford menstrual products and have limited access to water and sanitation services.
"If you're a girl who lives in a single-parent household with your dad, you may be too embarrassed to ask about your period or sanitary products.
"Periods can be really difficult for people, especially little girls.
"There's also a financial side to it. Many girls can't afford sanitary products and their parents may be struggling financially as well, so they don't want to ask, or they can't."
Common period taboos include the idea that women are impure, dirty, or sinful during menstruation. Some women are discouraged from touching or washing their genitals during menstruation to eliminate the possibility that they may contaminate the water in the community bathing area.
However, it is important for the rest of the people in the workplace to understand that not every woman can bounce back so quickly.
While some may find relief from painkillers, others may need a few hours of restful sleep.
This has happened many times and skipping or rescheduling the meeting is not an option.
