It was the night time when the shopkeeper was shutting down his shop. 

Suddenly a Dog entered into the shop with a bag held in his mouth. 

The bag contained the list of items and some money. 

The shopkeeper went through the list and gave the required items and took the money. 

The shopkeeper was astonished with the Dog's intelligence. 

He followed the dog on its way back home because he wanted to see the master. 

He saw the Dog waiting for the bus on the bus stop. When the bus came, the dog boarded it and approached towards the bus conductor. 

The Dog then bent its neck in order to show him the note of its home address and money which was kept in his collar. 

The driver drove the bus to the address and Dog got down when it reached the owner's house. 

The Dog knocked at the door and barked to call its owner. The owner opened the door and started beating the Dog in rage. 

The Dog was beaten by his master black and blue.

The shopkeeper who was watching everything closely asked the reason for his furious behavior. 

The owner replied that Dog disturbed his sleep because He didn't carry the keys of the house along. 

The moral of the story is one is never able to withstand and fulfill all the expectations of others.

Cost/benefit analysis: A ratio used to evaluate risk versus reward in any Project. The lower the cost and the higher the profit, the greater the chances of a Project being successful.

Decision Tree Analysis: A visual tool for qualitative analysis that is ideally suited for evaluating scenarios affected by multiple subjective factors. PPM tools establish hypothetical scenarios and provide a basis for evaluating potential outcomes.

Scoring Model: An analytical technique that combines quantitative and qualitative factors of judgment with weights and scores. The technology creates a rational basis for prioritizing Projects with the highest scores.

Estimated Commercial Value (ECV): ECV incorporates risk into a formula similar to Net Present Value (NPV) to evaluate the chances of success for commercial and technical Projects.

Objective Matrix: This method breaks down a high-level organizational strategy into multiple business objectives and assigns scores to Projects as they align to each objective. The matrix allows sub-Goals to be formulated in a subtle way to evaluate Projects against objectives.

Project Portfolio Management Steps

The PPM process consists of five stages that ensure that high level alignment is maintained both throughout the Portfolio and throughout the PPM lifecycle.

Set business objectives. In order to reach agreement on Projects that work for your organization, teams need to be on the same page. One of the most popular ways to create that alignment is to develop a strategy map that outlines what the business objectives are and how team members should prioritize them.

Collect and research information on potential Projects. Compile a list of ideas for potential Projects and research those ideas. Some sources of inspiration may include ideas from team members, customer feedback, or special regulatory requirements. Then put together some high-level details on those considerations, such as potential resource requirements.

Narrow down your list and select the best Projects. The high-level data from the previous step will give you the tools to choose the Projects that best align with your business objectives. Use that data to define the differentiators of the Project and create a prospective Portfolio that will maximize your returns while balancing risk.

Validate Portfolio viability and initiate Projects. Next, you will need to verify the Portfolio of Projects against their viability and available resources. Expand the high-level data already collected and build a more realistic picture of the resources needed to complete a Project and what the potential setbacks might be. If the Project still seems viable, you can provide resources and move on.

Manage and monitor portfolio. Once the Project begins, you and your team will need to Manage them while tracking performance and re-calibrating as needed. This may mean handling issues such as re-scoping, reallocation of resources, and reviewing the entire Portfolio on a regular basis.
